Driftwood art work

Updated: Jun 22

Driftlove gets half of its name from driftwood.

For me, driftwood is much more than a material. It is a symbol of life's journey.

Every piece of driftwood was once part of a living tree. At some point it became separated, carried away by rivers, storms and the sea, travelling far from where it began. Over time, the forces of nature shaped it into something new.

Whenever I collect driftwood on the shores of Crete, I find myself wondering about its journey.

Where did it come from?

How long has it travelled?

What has it seen along the way?

In many ways, people are not so different.

We leave the places where we started. We meet new people, face challenges, change direction and gather experiences that shape who we become.

No two pieces of driftwood are the same.

No two human journeys are the same either.

That is one of the reasons I love working with driftwood. Every piece has its own character, its own story and its own beauty. The shapes I find inspire many of my creations, from small driftwood figures to larger storytelling installations.

When I look at a piece of driftwood, I don't see something that has been lost.

I see something that has travelled.

And perhaps that is why Driftlove could never have been called anything else.
